I romani dicevano che « onus probandi incumbit ei qui dicit, non ei qui negat » cioè che l'onere della prova è a carico di chi afferma qualche cosa (e non di chi la nega). A corollario si può aggiungere che « quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur », ossia what is asserted without argument can be denied without argument.
This is a basic principle for both the right and for rational thought and as such should be obvious but often is not.
