"Tactical Fighter Experiment," better known by the acronym "TFX", has gone down in history as one of the most sophisticated flight simulation of the early 90s. A short time after its launch, has prevailed to be the best of its kind not only in PC but even with respect to products developed for other formats of the period. The success allowed further adaptations to the Amiga (the famous sixteen bits of Commodore), PC-98 (a personal Japanese computer) and even for the first Playstation. The level of realism, understood as the complexity of the graphics and reproduction of the dynamics of flight and combat, was enough to arouse the interest of some nations, first of all England and Australia, which did not fail to involve the authors, famous "Digital Image Design", in subsequent projects purely military purposes. However, "TFX" offers several game modes, the main ones are: "Arcade," "Tour of Duty" and "Flash Points". In the first we are catapulted into action without many pleasantries, with no possibility of briefing and takeoff / landing, and then progress through a series of levels characterized by objectives more challenging and complex. The above two other ways, on the contrary, we fall into a real story that develops through a series of missions scattered throughout the different corners of the globe. These rules must be added: the free flight (simulator), which is freely fly the aircraft in a particular scenario characterized by the peculiar weather conditions at a certain time of day, the training mode, designed to inculcate the rudiments of simulated flight and let us now have access to the above-mentioned advanced mode (Training), and finally an interesting "editor" for the missions (UN Commander). The park includes air "the F-117A Nighthawk Stealth Fighter" 's "Eurofighter 2000" then the "Lockheed F-22 Superstar", each configurable to our needs.
One of the most interesting features of "Tactical Fighter Experiment" is definitely the "Virtual Cockpit" three-dimensional, a device that allows us to vary independently of the views from direction of the aircraft, so as to observe their surroundings from different angles. This "innovation" will then be taken up and improved by successive simulations, such as the equally famous "Eurofighter 2000". The cabin has three several monitors on which we can draw from time to time, the most relevant information for the aircraft, the flight and the fate of the mission. Although it is a purely action-oriented simulator, "TFX" does not hesitate, however, let us check even the most meticulous of the aircraft, such as: the descent of the cart, the angle of the flaps, the range of the radar, autopilot, the inclusion of the afterburners, witnessed the landing, the activation of a "stealth", the use of speed brakes, the deployment of countermeasures, and even the expulsion of the fuel tank! Of course, no shortage of weapons, which are characterized by bombs and missiles of various types, each of which characterized by a particular system for engaging the target. The accuracy of the simulation can be changed at will by acting on both the "flight model" that the "realism" of the surrounding environment. The first feature allows you to determine how the different physical forces affecting the maneuverability of the aircraft, the other hand, provides for the weather and the effects of gravity.
In other words, temperature, altitude, the presence of rain, wind, and the geographical position of the environment, help to describe realistically the response of the aircraft, as well as the ' acceleration di gravità (G) fa sentire i suoi effetti sul velivolo e sul pilota, soprattutto in corrispondenza delle manovre più estreme.
