The Grim Reaper

The Reaper
("The Meaning of Life, Monty Python , 1983)
An aphorism says that the only certain things in the world are death and taxes ... This is true in all civilized countries. In Italy - to paraphrase Benigni - taxes are certain only for their pay. For those who deal with this certainty is the fiscal policy of this government, which for 16 years now has been focused on amnesty, amnesty, tax shields and decriminalization. On the other hand, those who pay taxes in Italy, has more certainty: they will continue to increase. We have moved this year from fourth to third place in Europe for the tax burden.

I will then subject the other, less gloomy, more equitable taxes, the death ...

Death and the fear of death are the subject of a debate that continues perhaps the dawn of time. What would philosophy, religion, science, literature, poetry without the awareness of the limits of our life?

During the twentieth century, life expectancy at birth in western countries has almost tripled. Who was born in the Middle Ages could hope to live up to 30/35 years. Those born in the West today can hope to arrive safely at 80/85.

Today more people live and die for reasons other than in the past. No one has ever died in the Middle Ages to aircraft accidents, someone was hit by lightning, but no one has ever struck dead for touching an electric wire caught.

On the other hand, if you look at the statistics, it is clear that - even today - fear of certain types of death is something that perhaps goes even further irrationality.

I bought a book called "The end of it all - from individuals to the entire universe ", by Chris Impey (The Library of Science). The title brings the temptation to touch the most hardened skeptic to iron also, the front cover is all black, and the fourth looks like a marble slab ... Too, because a skeptic can resist!

One of the first paragraph has an interesting passage on fear of death and the almost full report here.

"Driving is by far the most dangerous activity between what we do every day, yet they are very rare people who have a clear awareness. The accidents at the wheel or motorbike are among the leading cause of death among teenagers.

Many people are afraid to fly, but the probability of dying in a plane crash is 1 in 19,000, so that should fly once a week throughout their lifetime because the rate is close to the risk of dying of cancer.

The fear of dying in a terrorist attack is just ridiculous. For every American killed by a terrorist, there are 10,000 shot dead by a non-terrorist, what's more, most of these non-terrorists are people who know each other, and usually they are relatives.

Here are some bare facts and incontrovertible: the cold is more dangerous than hot. The toothpicks are more dangerous than lightning. Pedestrians are the most dangerous of the fire. The beds are the most dangerous of the stairs. Snakes are the most dangerous terrorists. Pyjamas flammable synthetic fabric are more dangerous than a bee sting. The coconuts are more dangerous than sharks.

And here are some practical advice based on statistics. The American Medical Association showed that in the U.S. Most deaths are caused by modifiable behaviors. If everyone ate properly, did exercise and stopped smoking, the mortality rate would be reduced by one third. It's simple, but is also somewhat 'trivial, then stretch a bit' this list to find out what other changes in lifestyle would be worth considering.

Accidental falls are fatal in 1 in 36, then after the jog daily should sit at home. Then, the second most dangerous thing we ourselves have held positive thoughts away from suicide. A range of natural hazards can be avoided by choosing the right place to live. A nice little place like Muncie, Indiana, would make us immune to tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis and so the risk of drowning. Those parts, then, the houses are cheap, which is good. To an American, also the probability of dying from an execution is 1 in 60,000, down sharply if we respect the law.

proceed further to examine the risks borders on obsession, but what the heck!

The water is dangerous in inverse proportion to its quantity. And so, the bathtub is more dangerous than swimming pools, in turn, the most dangerous sea. And it is good practice to handle with care a cup of coffee or tea.

wear a suit of armor or asbestos insulation or fabric helps manage situations as attacks of wild animals, snake bites or poisonous insects and high-voltage discharge. Even

gambling can become a problem. The National Public Radio reported that New Yorkers have 17 times more likely to die while crossing the bridge to New Jersey in order to buy a lottery ticket issued by the State than to win the first prize of the lottery. Here's another good reason to sit quietly at home.

Finally - and not a suggestion, because we can not do anything about this - is to be hoped to be a woman. The females live longer than males. Their main risk of gender - to die while giving birth to a son - has been dramatically reduced thanks to increased attention from physicians, and then are not likely to die in war. The worst enemies of women are men. Males drink more, smoke more and die more often in traffic accidents, and kill and kill more often. It follows that the gap between life expectancy in males and females is opening more and more ... "
